Thick legs despite diet: an easy way to get started with lipedema

Thick legs despite diet

Fat legs despite diet - Madlen has a dream, a vision of your life, a goal. To achieve it, she pocketed a lot, faced painful experiences, and threw herself into an eating disorder just to keep up with each other's slender legs. Under the pressure of her own self-reflection, she hovers between several diet attempts and fattening up the family, with the hope of getting Madlen out of her underweight again.

If you give your suffering too much space, you risk forgetting about life.

One day she gets food for thought from a friend as to whether she might not have lipedema after all. Night-long research and the diagnosis of Dr. Cornely in Cologne bring her, in a sense, this strange release that grabs you. For most of those affected, the diagnosis of lipedema is finally the certainty that they have given this cruel child a name and that they have finally found a beginning. Madlen quickly reaches for the final solution and faces the three crucial operations that will change her life. As a person who has already been operated on, she can confirm the phenomenon that she addresses in the book. “Phantom pain of the soul” describes it very aptly. After one could physically lay off this burden in the form of pathological fat, the soul could not so easily digest this long, arduous journey. She writes very aptly:

My advice is to give yourself time. To slowly let go of what has been bothering you for so long. [...] Only those who look at body and soul in harmony will become really healthy.

Awaken the public

It is important and good that Madlen Kaniuth, as a public figure, published the book in May 2015. The lipedema needs more loud voices of explanation and pointing fingers to the grievances on the part of the health insurance companies. With the striking title "Thick legs despite diet - My life with lipedema" will certainly and hopefully many affected people, friends and acquaintances become aware of the topic, give away the book and thus one or the other certainty.

The spelling is very easily accessible, as is the biography, which for a little more than half, takes up a large part. This is of course also correct, since the book is supposed to be about life with lipedema. For me, however, it was very limited to the externally triggered pain, from which the eating disorder resulted. The dramatic physical suffering was of secondary importance in Madlen's case. Everyone has their own story to tell about their suffering, so it's perfectly fine, but maybe just a little one-sided now.

Summary

This book can only be recommended to a limited extent to well-informed lipoedema sufferers, as the biography and the way into the public do not provide any really new impressions. However, if you are still at the beginning of the diagnosis and are looking for a little support, understanding and clarification, you will find it here. Madlen tells us sensitively and step by step about her path to diagnosis and relief through the operations.

For my taste, the human not entirely undisputed Dr. Manuel Cornely too big a role. I can only speak of the stories from the self-help groups, but I have read too many negative experiences in recent years to leave it uncommented at this point. They were mostly interpersonal, so I condemn Dr. Not Cornely without knowing him. I just had a bad taste every time I read from him. There are good doctors and clinics in every direction in Germany, of which I will certainly compile a list here.

I also find it a shame that there are no pictures in the appendix or in certain crucial places in the book. Perhaps it would also sensitize those not affected to the external characteristics. Of course, in the days of Google, that's no drama, but it wouldn't have hurt.

According to the book

Madlen has come one step closer to a more carefree life and is now an ambassador of the Lipedema Help eV for more attention and Education in the public. This is wonderful work and helps pave a simpler future for the next affected generations.

I and certainly many others thank you Madlen Kaniuth for their openness and their step to hold on to this rocky road to a better life for us. Just take a look at the book, give it to someone who might open it or recommend it to friends and family for greater understanding.

Author: Caroline Sprott

I'm Caroline, born in 1989 and live in Augsburg. Why did I start the lipedema fashion blog? At the beginning of my diagnosis I was completely helpless before an uncertain future. Now, a few years later, through active participation in self-help groups and a lot of research, I have accumulated a wealth of experience that I would like to make available to other affected persons in one place - without the detour via private groups on Facebook. The fashion component is of course due to my hobby. At the time, I promised myself that I would never be restricted by compression stockings. This attitude gives other patients courage and so Michaela advised me to start a blog.
