Negative becomes positive - what to do with hurtful statements from the environment?

thoughts

Somebody once told me that I couldn't make society more sensitive to myself and my illness, because I will always look somehow different. Either I learn to live with it or I will destroy myself sooner or later!

Do I even fit here ...

This statement made me very angry at first, because let's be honest. Who is he to throw something like that at me? And did I even ask him for his opinion? Where does this trend actually come from, popping people's minds without being asked? Question after question came to me. Because let's be honest, who wants to hear something that has a bad taste? Not me.

Nevertheless, the person has now said these sentences to me. I couldn't get the words out of my mind either - great. So I asked myself why I am so concerned with it and decided to just let it sink in. Well, I'm quite tall for a woman (1 m), strongly built, have very pronounced lipoedema and lymphedema in my arms and legs, only wear clothes, plus my flat-knit compression, gloves and a torax bandage. To better support the compression, I regularly wrap a long-stretch bandage around my legs or arms and my hair, just like bandage or compression, can also wear a little color. But why does that make me different from what thousands of others are! Right, it doesn't.

Nobody turns it into something "different", but what he is right about is that I cannot change it if there are comments about myself or my appearance. Whether negative or positive. But what I can do is start with myself.

Everyone is responsible for themselves and their actions and thus has the power to change something.

In my case there are things that contribute to my health and well-being. I don't wear them every day with the same joy or devotion, but I wear them. I am more than aware of how grateful I can be that I am living in a time when there are just such opportunities to simplify and beautify life for me and for everyone who also suffers from these or other diseases.

 Making the best of it

Words from strangers are not always only negative, they are also useful for reflecting on yourself, your thoughts and actions and thus, if necessary, to change or improve something. This world has become so incredibly fast-paced, hardly anyone has time to become aware of the beauty of nature and the peculiarities of humanity.

And yet they still exist, the people who sweeten the day.

With small gestures in which they might open the door, say good morning or just smile at you. And these are not things that hold you back in the hustle and bustle of everyday life or restrict you in our stubborn rut, in which we are often stuck.

Sometimes you should just stand still, straighten your body and give a smile to the people who come towards us. Just because I can. And you can too!

  • Hi Britta,
good, touching post. But something very mundane: I'm also a fan of the long-stretch bandages. Wear it over the compression when doing endurance sports. I have normal weight, but still have lipedema with pronounced pain in the lower extremities and an extreme tendency to bruise. That's why I wear compression stockings almost every day, at least when doing sports. Where do you get these wonderful colored long-stretch bandages from? I dyed normal skin-colored ones from the pharmacy and with textile dye for the washing machine. Looks great but is tedious. I would also like to buy a colored bandage in between.
    Greetings from Mi
