Diet with lipedema: how to eat properly

How do I properly eat with lipedema? Now some of you think that I can definitely answer this question as a nutritionist.
Best of all in a nutshell in five sentences and of course for everyone to use. Unfortunately no, I have to disappoint you!

I started studying nutrition about two years ago because I was totally confused by the 100000 diets and forms of nutrition that I had found on the Internet and, in my opinion, I had a completely wrong idea of a healthy and balanced diet. I am of the opinion that every 2nd-3rd Man has this wrong image.

Warum eigentlich?

The internet is full of diets and exercise programs that cost a lot of money and ultimately only bring limited benefits. Because if you don't stick to the strictly prescribed plan, you won't be successful. Frustration sets in and possibly even an increase follows.

With a balanced and healthy diet, no diet counts for me. If you want to change something in your diet, you should make a diet change and implement it step by step.

Furthermore, I asked myself the question:

Who is actually taking out the right to judge which dress size is right or wrong? Called people thin or fat?

It goes without saying that health aspects must be taken into account from a certain size of clothing (too much strain on the heart and joints), but size 38 or 40 is nothing to worry about.
My studies have given me my balance in things balanced and healthy diet and thus found my comfortable weight. And actually without scales! I don't measure my feel-good weight with a number, but with my body feeling.

Diagnosis of lipedema

A year ago, however, when I was diagnosed with lipedema, I was advised to completely avoid carbohydrates. Well, at first I thought, as a nutritionist, that shouldn't be a problem and if the doctor says so, it will certainly do me good. At the time, I didn't question whether that was really healthy and good for me. So I started to eat mostly low-carb. In the beginning everything went really well. But after about four weeks I became completely dissatisfied. One ravenous hunger attack after the other chased me and in sport I also had no more power. For a long time I was frustrated. Why exactly I, as a nutritionist, had such problems with the nutritional principle, I could not understand and tried to hold on to it for another month - until I was completely discouraged.

During the two months it became clear to me that this certainly could not be the right form of nutrition for me and I switched back to my previous diet. I quickly found my rhythm again and felt much better again.

Diet with lipedema: how to eat properly

These eight weeks made it clear to me that everyone is different. Everyone has different needs and everyone has to find their own way of eating. You can get support for this, but nobody should squeeze you into a nutritional scheme that you don't feel comfortable with. A healthy diet should be fun for you. You should enjoy shopping, cooking and eating. Above all, nutrition should not negatively influence and determine your life!

Diet with lipedema: how to eat properly

There is no right or wrong - feel your way, find the perfect path for you (!) And your body will show you what is good for it or not. And of course it can also be a pizza, chocolate or a piece from the bakery!

I hope you find your own way!

I had seen lipedema fashion and thought it was amazing the energy with which the five women built this site. It gave me courage and I would like to pass this courage on to other people with lipedema. Therefore I am writing about all my new experiences with lipedema.

  • Hi Laura,
Thank you for the article! I see it like you do, everyone has to find their own definition of “healthy and balanced nutrition”. I say that over and over again to the readers of my blog.
For me, I found the ketogenic diet to be the right diet (for now), but that doesn't work for everyone either.
I linked your post in my blog right away: https://www.living-keto.de/fundstuecke-der-woche-5/ - I hope that's okay 🙂
    Wishing you all the best!
    Kind regards, Karen

  • Hello Laura, I have a question about basal metabolic rate. Don't get behind it that way. I've tested various calorie calculators and I always come up with a set of over 3000 Kcal. Is this the daily requirement of calories I can take in or how is it calculated? How many calories do I have to burn per day to lose weight? I am 170 cm tall, weigh 183 kg and am 29 years old. I'm a little desperate because I don't know why I don't lose weight despite not eating and exercising. I would be very grateful for a tip and your help.

    Greetings and a Merry Christmas!

  • Hi Laura,
because this post was recently published again on facebook, i read it.

In fact, I had hoped for well-founded tips in your post 🙂 However, not in the direction of low-carb, high-carb, no-carb and other snappy diet titles - I don't promise anything about that.

Rather, I have recently read again and again that lipedema is based on an inflammatory process, and that an anti-inflammatory diet could therefore be helpful.

However, I find the data on the Internet confusing and confusing - it is difficult to find reliable information here between homoeopathic beliefs and surreptitious advertising for food supplements.

It also says that you should avoid foods with estrogen-like phytochemicals - therefore tofu has long been on my menu.

I would love if someone - maybe you? - would bring some light into the darkness here and put together serious information.

    Best regards,
    Nico

    • Hello Nico,

beforehand, I completed a degree in general nutrition, which is about a healthy and balanced diet. Unfortunately, the diet with lipedema was not treated here. The subject of nutrition is just too big to be fully taught.
However, in the last 12 months I have read a lot into the subject of "nutrition with lipoedema" and of course the topic of nutrition in sport, but also with lipoedema, has a high priority in my everyday life. I am always on the lookout for new reports, articles and books and have also found that the Internet is actually full of many different opinions and it is very difficult to keep track of things.
Read through articles by 12 nutritionists and you'll have at least 10 different opinions 😉

In the last 12 months, I have found that it makes most sense to eat a healthy and balanced diet. Above all, not to lose the fun of a healthy diet.

A diet that eliminates inflammation-promoting foods in the body is still very new to me. A few weeks ago I read some reports on this and heard personal opinions about it and am now trying to limit the consumption of inflammation-promoting foods myself. So far I have the feeling that it is doing my body very well (not only with regard to lipedema)! I also have the feeling that I have even become a bit more productive in sports.

If you are interested in the topic, can I summarize my first experiences in an article?

      Regards
      Laura 🙂
